Former SC governor Nikki Haley planning Feb. 15 launch for 2024 White House bid

Nikki Haley is closer to making her presidential campaign official.

According to someone familiar with the plans, but not authorized to speak publicly, supporters of the ex-Gov. of South Carolina will receive an email invitation for a February 15 Charleston launch event. She plans to announce her campaign at that event.

The Post and Courier of Charleston first reported on Haley’s plans.

Haley, 51, was South Carolina’s governor for six consecutive years. She then served as President Donald Trump’s ambassador to United Nations. Haley, her former boss and the only Republican in the race for the 2024 nomination, will be Haley’s first opponent when she enters the race.

Trump was in South Carolina Saturday to support Gov. Henry McMaster, who was Haley’s lieutenant Governor — and several GOP members were part of his leadership team for the early-voting state.

Haley was a conflicted individual during the Trump administration. However, she was able to boost her public image while also arguing with other White House officials. Rumours that Haley would challenge Trump or replace Vice President Mike Pence in 2020 were fueled by her 2018 departure. But, Haley didn’t do either.

Instead, Haley went back to South Carolina where she purchased a Kiawah Island home, joined the Boeing Co. board, and began her speaking career. She reportedly earned fees up to $200,000. Two books were her first steps to the White House.

Haley expressed doubts about Trump’s future after the Jan. 6 Capitol Siege, but she said that she would not challenge him in 2024.

Haley stated in 2021 that she would not run if Donald Trump ran. However, she has changed her mind and is now supporting dozens of candidates for the 2022 midterm elections.

Haley revealed that she was “taking the holidays” and would consider running late last year.

When asked recently by Fox News why Haley is considering running despite her comments from 2021, Haley said that “a lot has changed”. She was referring to, among other things U.S. economic problems.

She said she believed she could be part “new generational change”, an indirect reference to Trump’s advanced age.

Trump said Saturday that Haley had called him several times earlier in South Carolina to get his opinion. Trump noted her pledge to not run against him earlier, but said that he did not attempt to stop her.

Trump stated that she was told by her mother that she wouldn’t run against me, because I was the best president. But people can change their opinions and change what’s inside them. “So I said, “If your heart desires it, you must go do it.”
