Historically Pro-Democrat Teamsters Union Contributes $5K to Sen. Josh Hawley, Inches Closer to Republicans

The Teamsters Union’s political action fund contributed $5,000 to the reelection campaigns of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), a move towards Republicans for a historically Democrat-aligned group.

Hawley wrote on X: “Thank you, @Teamsters.”

Axios reported the donation first on Monday and Breitbart confirmed that the union had done so.

Breitbart reported that the donation came after the union’s PAC donated to the Republican National Committee for the first 20 years. The union leadership had met with Donald Trump twice in January and the $45,000 donation came after that meeting.

The last donation made by the labor group to the RNC in 2004 was $15,000.

Axios reported that “it’s the latest sign that one of America’s largest and most powerful unions, which has not yet endorsed a candidate for the presidency election, is willing to support Republicans who share their priorities.”

Hawley was reported to have made it a point of aligning himself with the labor movement. He joined Teamster workers in a strike outside St. Louis in March. In late 2022 he voted to approve an amendment by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, to add seven sick days paid to rail workers contracts.

Hawley raised $2.56m to Lucas Kunce’s $2.25m in the first quarter 2024.

The outlet stated that Republicans, “led by Trump,” have made “inroads among working-class leaders if not with all of them.” However, the United Auto Workers still endorsed Joe Biden as president in January.

Biden, who met with union workers at a Wisconsin meeting in January, wore a hardhat in the wrong direction, causing widespread ridicule on social media.
