Liz Cheney: Our Politics Created a Situation Where ‘We’re Electing Idiots’

“CNN This Morning,” Tuesday, played a clip of Liz Cheney, former representative from Wyoming (R), saying that the United States “elects idiots,” while speaking at an event held in New York City Center for Culture and Arts on Monday night.

Phil Mattingly, the co-host, said: “Liz Cheney spoke yesterday night. She is so subtle. “I want you to listen to what she said.”

Cheney said: “We’ve created a situation in which we elect idiots.” So, I don’t think about it from the perspective of what I should or shouldn’t be doing. How do we elect people who are serious? “I don’t think serious people should be partisan.

Margaret Hoover, a political commentator, said: “Yeah. She’s right. In her next sentence, she probably would have asked why we elect idiots. We have a closed partisan process, particularly on the Republican Side.”

She added, “If you take a look at the Republicans in the last election that voted for Donald Trump’s conviction, Lisa Murkowski for example, or even the two House Republicans who voted for impeachment and survived, they all came from states where some form of voting reform was passed, a type of electoral reform which allows the primary process to appeal to a wider group of Americans, not just a narrow ideological base of a particular party.”
