Nikki Haley enters race for president as first major challenger to Trump for the Republican nomination
Nikki Haley is a former governor in South Carolina and United Nations Ambassador. She announced Tuesday that she will be entering the 2024 presidential election, becoming the first Republican to challenge Donald Trump’s former boss.
Haley, 51, looked into the differences in ages between President Joe Biden, 80, and her challenger Trump (76). Although Biden has not yet officially announced his candidacy for the presidency, it is expected that he will in the next few weeks.
“Republicans lost the popular vote in seven of the eight previous presidential elections.” In a Twitter video, Haley stated that this must change. She called for a new generation leaders and said Biden’s record was “abysmal” while pointing out that Washington has “failed us over and again.”
Haley announced her candidacy for the race one day before she scheduled Charleston’s formal campaign launch. She called for fiscal responsibility as well as secured borders.
Haley has been gathering a team to investigate a possible run for several weeks, despite her previous claims that she would not run if Trump launched his third campaign for the White House.
Trump quickly pointed out Haley’s previous stance Tuesday morning. He said to NBC News: “Even though Nikki Haley stated, ‘I would not run against my President’, he was a great president, the best President I have ever seen,’ I told her to follow her heart and do whatever she wants. I wish her luck!”
She joins the race after Trump and other potential challengers in public polls.
For instance, a Morning Consult poll from Tuesday shows Trump being supported by 47% of Republican primary voters while only 3% of respondents indicated they would choose Haley. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is widely expected to run for the election. Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice-president, has 7%.
Ex-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), is Trump’s most staunchest Republican opponent in the U.S. House. She currently holds 3% of the vote. None of these potential challengers has officially announced a run.
Haley was born and raised in South Carolina. She noted that her Indian parents made Haley “different” from other Americans. This forced her to seek out similarities with others. Her parents made her the nation’s first Asian American female governor and first Indian American member to the Cabinet.
She acknowledged the deep political divisions as well as the racial, and socioeconomic tensions in this nation right now. She said she’s witnessed and heard about atrocities overseas which underscore the freedoms Americans enjoy.
She said, “I’ve seen evil.” She said that China’s leaders commit genocide, while Iran murders those who question its policies. Haley stated that America is blessed even on its worst days.
She said that the political turmoil in the U.S. is seen by many as a vulnerability at home and abroad.
“The socialist left sees a chance to rewrite the history. China and Russia are marching. She said that they all believe we can be bullied and kicked around.” “You should know something about me: I don’t tolerate bullies. If you kick back it hurts even more.
Haley’s highly anticipated announcement is only the second candidate in a likely wide Republican primary field. DeSantis and Pence are also popular GOP names.
For now, Haley is Trump’s only rival. This puts her in an awkward position as she has changed her attitude towards Trump in the wake the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot by a mob his supporters.
The Trump-fueled riot disrupted Biden’s transfer of power. Haley stated that she was “disgusted by Trump’s actions” shortly after the attack.
She reverted to a positive view of Trump like many other Republicans. Trump is still highly liked by a large portion of the GOP base.
Taylor Budowich, the head of the pro Trump Make America Great Again PAC said, “Nikki Haley just another career politician.”
She started as a Never Trumper, before she resigned to serve in Trump’s administration. The statement stated that she then resigned before the Trump administration to make more money on corporate boards. “Now she tells us that she represents a new generation. She is a career politician whose only commitment to herself is to herself.”
The Democratic National Committee was not much better. The Democratic National Committee was not much nicer.
It stated that Haley’s entry officially kicks off a chaotic 2024 primary race for MAGA base members, which has been long in the making.
Haley’s campaign event, previously teased in a “special announcement”, is scheduled for Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. ET in Charleston She’ll be on the campaign trail the next day with stops in New Hampshire and Iowa.
