Marc Elias was heavily involved in pushing the Steele dossier, which sought to falsely link the former president with Russia. The Democratic National Committee has cut ties with him.

According to PunchBowl News sources, Elias has had numerous disagreements with the DNC, having represented it since 2009. His firm, Elias Law Group was founded in 2021 and works for many Democratic legislators and entities such as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCC) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSC), according to records.

Ammar Moussa, DNC spokesperson, stated that the DNC collaborates with many law firms in areas such as contracting, compliance, and voting rights litigation. “The DNC is grateful for Elias Law Group’s many years of service to the shared values.”

According to campaign finance disclosures, Elias Law Group was paid more than $2 million by the DNC between November 2021-February 2023. Elias served as general counsel to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. He also commissioned the Trump Russia dossier. The lawyer hired Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm, to conduct the investigation. Fusion GPS then brought in Christopher Steele, a British ex-spy, in 2016. Steele was offered $1 million by the FBI in order to prove the allegations against Trump in the FBI’s 2016 election. However, the FBI supervisory analyst Brian Auten testified that Steele did not receive the money because of lack of evidence.

In the wake of “bogus” information being received by informants including Steele, which was first reported by the Washington Examiner, Rep. Jim Jordan (R.OH) wrote several questions to the FBI the following month. Andrew DeFilippis, then-prosecutor for John Durham, was appointed special counsel to investigate FBI’s 2016 Russia election interference inquiry. He grilled Elias about his role in pushing this collusion narrative in May 2022.
