House Republicans unveil articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas: ‘Threatens our national security’
On Sunday, House Republicans released articles of impeachment for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The impeachment articles stated that “Alejandro N. Mayorkas has systematically and willfully refused to comply with Federal Immigration Laws in violation of his Oath of Support and Defense of the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic and to have true faith and loyalty to the same.”
The GOP representatives said Mayorkas “repeatedly” violated immigration and border laws passed by Congress.
The document went on to say that “Millions of illegal aliens enter the United States every year, and many remain there unlawfully,” in large part due to his conduct. His refusal to obey the laws is not only an offence against the separation powers in the Constitution, but it also threatens national security. It has also had a devastating impact on communities throughout the country.
Articles of impeachment warn of illegal entry by non-citizens listed on terrorist watchlists invading country.
In the fiscal years of 2017 to 2020, 11 people on the terrorist watchlist were caught trying to cross the southern border. In fiscal year 2023, however, 169 people on the terrorist list attempted to enter the U.S. In 2024, 49 terrorists have been arrested at the border.
Last week, former FBI officials warned Congress of a “new, imminent danger” posed by “military men from around the world” who could infiltrate the southern border and launch a devastating attack on U.S. territory.
The impeachment article stated: “Despite clear evidence of his willful, systemic refusal of complying with the law that has contributed to unprecedented numbers of illegal immigrants, increased control of Southwest border by drug cartels and the imposition on States and Localities affected by influx of aliens. Alejandro N. Mayorkas continued to refuse to comply with law and has acted gravely to the detriment to interests of the United States.”
The GOP lawmakers declared that Mayorkas had “implemented an illegal catch-and-release scheme” whereby aliens were released without any effective mechanism to ensure their appearance before immigration courts to face removal proceedings, or to ensure their removal in the event of aliens who have been ordered to be removed.
During the fiscal years 2017 to 2020, the Republican representatives wrote that an average of 590 000 illegal immigrants were encountered at the ports of entry along the Southwest border. Mayorkas was in office when the numbers soared to 1,400,000 in fiscal 2021, 2,300,000. and 2,400,000 in 2023.
The articles of impeachment stated that the large influx of undocumented immigrants has created a financial and humanitarian crisis, and has dramatically degraded Americans’ quality of life.
The GOP politicians pointed to the fact that New York City has already spent $1.45billion on the migrant issue, and will spend an additional $12billion over the next 3 fiscal years. This has led to significant cuts in city services.
The articles of impeachment highlighted the fact that “the flow of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs across the border, as well as between ports of entry and within them, has increased drastically” when Mayorkas was at the DHS.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized 4,800 pounds of Fentanyl during fiscal year 2020. This was followed by 11,200 pounds for fiscal year 20,21, and an estimated 14,700 lbs in fiscal 2022.
In 2022, more than 70,000 Americans will have died of fentanyl poisoning. The lethal drug has been the leading killer among Americans between 18 and 45 years old.
Mark Green (R Tennessee) introduced the articles of impeachment for Mayorkas.
Green said, “These articles present a compelling and irrefutable argument for the impeachment of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He has willfully, and in a systematic way, refused to follow immigration laws passed by Congress. He has violated the public’s trust by making false statements before Congress and the American People, and obstructing the oversight of his Department by Congress.”
The House Homeland Security Committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday morning and will discuss the articles of impeachment.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R.-La.). Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has promised to bring the bills to the House floor as soon as possible for a vote.
In a response to the allegations, Homeland Security said that Republicans failed to provide evidence that Mayorkas committed “high crimes or misdemeanors.”
The DHS said that “This is nothing more than the same old political games by the Republicans of the House Homeland Security Committee” (CHS). “They do not want to solve the problem, they just want to run a campaign around it.” They have undermined attempts to find bipartisan solutions, ignored legal scholars, experts and the Constitution in their quest to impeach Secretary Mayorkas.
