Texas AG Probes Reports of Noncitizens Registering to Vote

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced that he will launch an investigation into allegations that non-citizens have been illegally registered to vote.

The Republican stated that “Texans are deeply concerned by the possibility of organizations claiming to help with voter registration illegally registering citizens to vote in our election” and that “his office is investigating every credible report that we receive about potential criminal activity that may compromise the integrity our elections.”

Paxton stated in his statement that it is illegal to vote or register to vote if one is not an American citizen.

According to Paxton’s Office, in Texas, lying when registering to register to vote, or helping another person to do so, is a crime punishable by up to 180-days imprisonment and fines of up $10,000.

In Texas, it is also a crime for someone who’s not a U.S. Citizen and is not a resident of the state to vote or help someone else vote who’s not a U.S. Citizen and is not from Texas. His office stated that the crime can result in a prison sentence of up 20 years and a fine up to $10,000.
