Biden, Trump to make dueling visits to border this week

On Thursday, President Biden will be accompanied by former President Donald Trump to the border. They are competing for political advantage as well as a chance to blame each other on a topic that is becoming increasingly important to voters.

Mr. Biden is going to visit a part of the border that’s relatively calm in Brownsville, Texas. The White House announced that he will meet with Border Patrol agents, local officials, and push Congress to pass legislation giving more flexibility for him to control the flow migrants.

Mr. Trump is about 300 miles from Eagle Pass where the border chaos is much worse and the Texas and federal governments are embroiled in a constitutional crisis over Texas’ efforts to fight illegal immigration.

Biden ignored the border when it spiraled out-of-control under his watch. He has only made one short visit. The White House stated that he saw an opportunity to blame Republicans for blocking action on a bipartisan bill bordering the United States.

Karine Jean-Pierre, spokesperson for the American public, said: “We had stated that we would take it to them so that they knew.” They know what is going on in Congress.

Mr. Biden was hammered over the death in Georgia of Laken Hope, a student, and the arresting of an illegal alien accused of the murder.

Jose Antonio Ibarra (26), a Venezuelan was arrested at the border’s southern end in 2022. He was then released by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who had “parole” powers.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported that New York City Police arrested him on charges of a traffic infraction and acting in a way to harm a child under 17 years old. The city released him prior to ICE issuing a detainer.

ICE has issued a Georgia detainer asking to be notified if M. Ibarra was released again.

The White House declined to confirm whether Mr. Biden plans to make any specific announcements.

The president also wants to release tens and tens billions in aid for Ukraine’s conflict, which has been linked to improvements to U.S. Border Security.

Mr. Trump visited the border frequently during his tenure in office. The wall-building project may have been his most visible campaign pledge and tangible presidential achievement. He called Mr. Biden a copycat because he visited the same day that he did.

“Crooked Joe Biden had three years to fix the crisis that he caused at the border.” Biden’s handlers send him to the border on the same date as President Trump, not because they want to fix the problem but because they are aware that Biden will lose badly, said Trump campaign press secretary KarolineLeavitt.

It’s not hard to understand why voters rate Mr. Biden’s handling of immigration as worse than any major issue.

Mr. Trump handed over a border that was relatively calm, with approximately 74,000 illegal migrants nabbed along the southern border during December 2020, his last full month in office. All were either detained or deported quickly.

The Department of Homeland Security caught and released the majority of the 300,000 illegal migrants that were detected at the southern border in December.

Since the beginning of Mr. Biden’s tenure in office, over 3 million illegal immigrants were released into American communities, demonstrating their ability to assimilate. The Biden Administration has also broken records in the amount of fentanyl being smuggled and the number terrorist suspects at the southern border.

Republicans claim that Mr. Biden caused the chaos by his crusade against a series successful Trump policies. These included restricting asylum requests and forcing illegal immigrants into Mexico in order to deny them an entry into the U.S. as they awaited immigration court hearings.

Biden, it is reported, is now considering reviving these policies via executive action. He would be committing a “road to Damascus” conversion, which could anger his left-wing, as he tries to stop the bleeding of the political centre.

As a way to shield himself from criticism, the president wanted to sign the border bill that was developed by both parties in the Senate.

This legislation was defeated by a bipartisan filibuster this month in the Senate, where a few Democrats joined most Republicans in blocking it.

Republicans claimed that the plan did not do enough to curb illegal immigration. They said it allowed up to 5,000 illegal migrants per day. Democrats opposed the plan, saying it went too far to limit migrants’ ability to seek asylum.

Senators are likely to begin impeachment proceedings for Mr. Mayorkas. The House had branded him the first cabinet secretary ever impeached.

Ms. Jean Pierre said that Mr. Biden would like to take advantage of his visit to Border Patrol agents to discuss what additional resources they require.

She said, “They need to do more.”

Mr. Biden proposed that Border Patrol agents be added to the force. However, the Border Patrol already has a budget well below the maximum level due to attrition among its ranks.

The majority of agents support border walls, technology and roads, even though Mr. Biden opposed these plans and said he would not build another foot under his watch.

Biden made his first border crossing in January 2023. He announced in El Paso, Texas that he would make changes to solve the problem, such as using parole powers to convince unauthorized migrants to arrive at official entry points.

The border numbers dropped in early summer, then surged back up to catastrophic levels by the end of the year.

During his tenure as president, Mr. Trump visited the border frequently to check on progress of his wall project.

This week, his trip to Eagle Pass puts him in a critical situation.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered his State Police and National Guard to lay miles and miles of razor-wire along the Rio Grande, and to install floating walls in the river.

These two cases are the subject to tense legal battles.

Texas National Guard troops took over a local park, which the Border Patrol was using for staging catch-and release operations.
