Matt Gaetz Resigns from Congress After Trump Nominates Him as Attorney General

Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, has resigned his seat in Congress after Donald Trump appointed him as the Attorney General of his administration.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA, announced and confirmed Gaetz’s resignation as “effective immediately”. A special election in Gaetz’s congressional district will also be held.

Mike Johnson said that Gaetz had resigned from his position due to the state law which gives “an 8-week period for selecting and filling a vacant chair.”

Johnson explained Gaetz’s reasoning. “If you start now, if we do the maths, we might be able fill this seat as soon as January 3 when we swear in the new Congress,” Johnson said.
