Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Thomas Massie get into shouting match over gun violence
On Wednesday, two lawmakers engaged in a verbal battle outside the House to discuss measures to reduce gun violence in schools following the Nashville massacre at The Covenant School.
The heated exchange between Reps. Jamaal (D-NY), and Thomas Massie, (R-Ky.), began when the New York congressman shouted at his GOP colleagues after they left the chamber because they didn’t support stricter gun control measures following Monday’s shooting that left three people and their children dead.
“They’re cowards! Bowman, a former Bronx school principal, shouted at reporters about the Republican members who were walking down the hall.
“They won’t do anything to save our children’s lives at all.” Bowman said, “Cowards!” “Pressure them. Forcibly ask them to answer the question “Why don’t YOU save America’s children?” Let them do that until Election Day 2024.
“They are freaking cowards. Bowman shouted, “They’re gutless.”
Massie, cochairman of House Second Amendment Caucus and gun owner, was attracted to the tirade. Bowman asked him what he was ranting about.
Bowman responded, “I’m talking to gun violence.”
Bowman was not having it. Massie tried to explain to Bowman that arming teachers might be a way to counter school shootings.
Massie stated, “You know what? There’s never been school shooting in schools that allow teachers to carry.”
Bowman, incredulous, replied “Carry guns?” “More guns equals more death!”
“Look at the data. The New York Democrat said, “You’re not looking for any data.” As the men began to speak over one another,
Rep. Steny H. (D-Md. The 83-year-old Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) tried to intervene once, but he was unable to get the attention the angry congressman.
Bowman accused Massie “carrying water for the gun lobby”. The Kentucky Republican continued trying to make his point regarding arming teachers. Bowman told Bowman to “calm down” at one point.
“Calm down? Bowman shouted, “Children are dying.”
Massie left Bowman’s office and went to meet reporters. The representative from New York’s 16th district began asking Massie repeatedly, “Have any of you ever worked at a school?”
Massie said, “You’re just screaming to me,” and then he went over for reporters to say, “We have weapons here to protect ourselves, and he doesn’t believe that children should have someone to protect them.”
Massie shared video on Twitter of their tense exchange, writing that Massie wanted to talk about solutions to school shootings. However, when Massie offered a solution, he started shouting. He demanded data. I gave it to him, but he continued shouting. Facts. “There has never been a school shooting at the hundreds of schools that permit staff to carry.”
Bowman tweeted, “Republicans won’t do SHIT when gun violence is concerned, but please tell me to be calm. NO. We cannot calm down. Every day, people die while we wait.”
