Canada pledges five-fold increase in visas for Gazans

According to Canadian officials, in most cases, visa holders will be allowed to stay up to three (3) years.

Canada has announced that it will raise the number of Gazans eligible for visas to 5,000.

The Canadian government announced Monday that Gazans who live in Gaza and are related to Canadian citizens or permanent residents living in Canada will be eligible to apply for a visa for temporary residence. They will also be supported for one year by their relative.

According to Canadian officials, in most cases, visas are granted for a maximum of three years.

Reuters reported that Canada announced its special visa program in December for 1,000 Gazans, before increasing it to 5,000 visas on Monday.

Marc Miller, Canadian Immigration Minister, said that the focus of their efforts was to keep families together. “Canada continues to provide the local authorities with names of those who passed preliminary screening in order to ensure their exit from Gaza.”

People have managed to leave Gaza through Egypt and not the traditional immigration channels. Tayyip Erdoan, the Turkish president, said in a statement earlier this month that more than 1,000 Hamas members are receiving treatment in Turkey. It was not immediately known how they got to Turkey for treatment.
