Israeli ground forces raid Hamas sites in Gaza, withdraw – IDF
The IDF announced that the Givati Brigade, Israeli ground forces, conducted a limited ground incursion in Gaza over night, and then retreated from the area a few hours later. Israel’s Army Radio called this the largest incursion of current war.
The military released a video of overnight action showing armored vehicles moving through a sandy border area. The video shows a bulldozer destroying a part of the raised bank. Tanks fire shells and there are explosions near or among a row damaged buildings. IDF spokesperson R.Adm. Daniel Hagari stated that no Israeli soldiers were injured in the raid.
The IDF called this “a targeted tank raid in the northern Gaza Strip as part of the preparations for the subsequent stages of combat”. The Givati Brigade was in charge of the activity. During this activity, soldiers found and destroyed numerous terrorists and terror infrastructure as well as anti-tank missile launch sites, and prepared the battlefield.”
Israel also struck 250 Hamas-related targets over night, which is when the majority of airstrikes occur. The 720 targets that were struck during the first two days of the week are now added to the 1,000 airstrikes carried out this week. Israel carried out thousands more strikes in the first week, using around 6,000 rounds of munitions.
Unlike many previous Gaza wars, the total number of rocket interceptions and rocket fire has not been updated. In 2014, terrorists fired around 4,700 rockets in Gaza over 50 days. Terrorists fired 4,300 rockets over ten days in 2023.
IDF also attacked Hamas near Khan Yunis from the sea. Hamas’ launch sites are located near a kindergarten and a mosque, according to media reports. The IDF reported that Hamas continues to use the Gaza Strip residents as human shields and to prevent passage into the southern part of the Strip. This was confirmed by 504 Intelligence.
Hagari has updated the number known of kidnapped people in Gaza. The new figure is 224. The number of confirmed kidnapped people continues to grow, despite the fact that four women were released. Israel is still identifying missing persons and trying to identify those who died on October 7.
The overnight raid was conducted to gather information and prepare the next phase. In general, it is rare for militaries to conduct raids like this during major ground operations. They prefer to be the ones to initiate and take the lead. These types of maneuvers can be used in the fight against terrorism when an enemy is being contained and blocked, such as Hamas in Gaza.
During the battle for Mosul the Iraqi forces conducted raids on ISIS. During the Second Lebanon War the IDF used raids as well to capture villages and then retreat. The overnight raid destroyed anti-tank positions, allowing the IDF time to complete engineering work before departing.
Overnight, the rocket fire from Gaza was reduced and for a period of 12 hours no rockets had been fired. The IDF Home Front urges Israelis to not be complacent, and to take the guidelines seriously. According to an article published in Yediot Aharonot, the IDF is continuing to buy equipment on a scale that has never been seen before. The IDF is buying equipment at an unprecedented scale due to concerns about a war on multiple fronts. The 300,000 called-up reservists may stay for several months. This is a significant shift towards a war-based economy.
Israel also receives Iron Dome batteries from the US. Included in this are the two batteries sold to the US Army a few years ago. The US is home to a joint venture of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems (formerly Raytheon) and RTX.
There are a number of developments on the domestic front. On Kaplan Street, near the Kirya, members of Kibbutz Kfar Aza organized an event in support of hostages. The Hotel Association also condemned a member for refusing to open several hotels in Jerusalem as evacuees. Hotels and guesthouses in Israel have hosted the 120,000 evacuees from the area surrounding Gaza and the Northern Border.
According to Walla’s report, Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, said that the government was not supporting those who had been evacuated as well as the survivors of the October 7 massacre. It appears that the government is scrambling for financial support to help local authorities as well as all of the victims from October 7. The government has allocated millions of shekels to communities in the South and North.
As Israel prepares for a ground-based operation, international pressure is increasing on Gaza’s humanitarian problems. Israel has also responded to criticisms from Turkey. Ankara doesn’t view Hamas a terrorist group, despite Turkey’s claim to be fighting “terrorists in Syria”.
Hamas claims that more than 7,000 people have been killed in the coastal enclave since Israel launched airstrikes following the Hamas massacre of 1,400 people on October 7. The IRGC has backed Hamas and warned Israel against entering Gaza. Hamas says that since Israel began airstrikes following the Hamas murder of 1,400 people in October 7, more than 7,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza.
