Gordon signs Child Gender Change Prohibition bill, vetos Regulation of Abortion bill

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed SF0099 – Children gender change prohibition today. This bans doctors from performing procedures on children related to gender reassignment and gender transitioning.

Gordon said in a press statement for the Governor’s Office that he signed SF99 “because I support the child protections included in this bill.” Gordon said, “I believe that the government is interfering in the family’s personal affairs.” He added, “Our legislator needs to clarify its intentions regarding parental rights.” It inserts government prerogatives in some places and affirms parental rights elsewhere.

ACLU Reacts to the signing of SF0099

The ACLU of Wyoming opposes Senate File 99. ACLU of Wyoming acting executive director Libby Skarin released the following statement:

By signing this bill into Law, Gov. Gordon has given the government authority to make vital decisions that were traditionally made by parents in Wyoming. This ban will not stop Wyomingites being trans but it will prevent them from receiving critical support to help struggling transgender teens grow into thriving transgender adult.

“Gov. Gordon and those who support Senate File 99 chose fearmongering and misrepresentations over the rights and lives of Wyoming’s transgender youth and families. This fight is not over. We are committed to building a future in which Wyoming is a place where every child can grow up safely. “As our politicians fail trans youth, we must all rise up against their ignorance and fear to surround them with love, strength and safety.”

Gordon Vetoes House Bill 0148

Today, Governor Gordon also vetoed House Bill0148- Regulation of Abortions. The Governor’s Office stated that the bill as originally proposed would have regulated Wyoming surgical abortion clinics properly. The bill’s purpose was complicated by amendments, which made it vulnerable to legal challenges. Wyoming has been defending its laws against chemical and surgical abortions.

Gordon said, “With the Wyoming Supreme Court certifying the cases, the state is now closer than ever before to a ruling on the constitutionality abortion in Wyoming.” He added, “It’s my opinion that HB148 as amended had the potential of further delaying the resolution of this crucial issue for the unborn.” I believe that a new legal argument would be a waste of time and could have resulted in the death of more unborn Wyomingns.
