Idaho governor announces executive order to tighten up voter registration rules
Daho Gov. Brad Little (R), the governor of Daho, announced on Tuesday an executive order to tighten voter registration in the State ahead of the fall election.
The Only Citizens Will Vote Act will give the Idaho Secretary of State the authority to “take any necessary steps” in order to prevent non-citizens registering to vote.
Little stated that “Idaho has the safest elections in the country, and we will keep it this way.” My executive order, the ONLY CITIZENS WOULD VOTE Act, directs Secretary Phil McGrane to work closely with county clerks in Idaho to clean our voter lists and ensure Idaho’s election is not affected by Biden’s open border.
According to the new order the Idaho secretary will examine the voter lists of the state with the local police and transportation department in order to identify any non-citizens. The secretary of State can also work closely with Homeland Security to verify the citizenship status of an individual and remove them from registration.
The secretary will provide an annual report on the efforts of county clerks to “prevent non-citizens and remove them from Idaho’s voting rolls.”
The order prohibits the state agencies from releasing voter registration information to citizens who are not citizens.
Little stated that the executive order had been signed to “fight back” against the “Left Coast States and the Biden administration”, as “more people are pouring across our open, lawless southern border illegally.”
Noncitizens are not allowed to vote in federal elections. However, some localities across the nation allow them to vote for more local races.
Idaho Secretary of state Phil McGrane stated in a press release that Idaho has great mechanisms for voter security, but there is always more to be done.
McGrane stated that although we already have excellent mechanisms to prevent non-citizens from voting in Idaho, there is still more we can do.
He told the Idaho Statesman he felt no further action was necessary because non-citizens are already prohibited from voting in Idaho.
He has since changed his opinion, and joined Little in the order. However, he still expressed concern about the legality for non-citizens to vote.
He told the outlet that “we’re seeing an increase and a push about people’s trust in elections linked to the news about migration.”
