NY Gov. Hochul’s job approval ratings hit historic low: Poll

NEW YORK – New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval ratings and favorability scores have dropped to their lowest levels in nearly three years, according to Siena College’s poll released on Thursday.

Hochul’s favorability score is at its lowest ever number, 38%. 49% of respondents view her unfavorably. Her approval rating for her job has also dropped to 44% with 50% disapproving. This is a marked decline from the 45-46% split in May.

The poll showed that while a small majority of voters believed Hochul demonstrated honesty and integrity (40-36%), and worked hard for the people (42-36%), larger pluralities felt she didn’t care about them (44-34%), and lacked decisive leadership (44-66%).

Steven Greenberg, a Siena College pollster, said that despite strongly supporting Hochul’s decision to delay congestion pricing and even more so the social media legislation she championed in her nearly three-year tenure as governor, Hochul now has the lowest favorable and job approval ratings of all the Governors she’s served.

The approval of Hochul’s job performance is significantly divided by party lines. Hochul has a favorable rating of two to one among Democrats and a job approval rating that is even higher. Among Republicans, she is viewed unfavorably by 81%, while 61% of Independents are also against her. 84% of Republicans, and 63% independents, disapprove of her performance.

Greenberg stated that “when it comes to the various Hochul traits, there is still a partisan divide between Democrats and Republicans on one side with independents on another side.” Democrats say Hochul is honest, a leader who takes decisive action, cares for people like them and works hard. Republicans and independents disagree.”

Voters do support some of Hochul’s recent policies. Voters of all parties support her decision to stop the congestion pricing plan. A bipartisan majority of 70-12 approved the bill that would ban algorithmic social media feeds addictive for minors.
