Report: Fani Willis Secretly Colluded with January 6 Committee; Could Blow Up Case

Fani Willis, the District Attorney of Fulton County in Georgia, secretly colluded to get tips from a Democrat-run, one-sided January 6 Committee that could help her prosecute Donald Trump. She then tried to hide this information out of public view and court by using a procedural maneuver.

The discovery could have a major impact on the prosecution of Trump, as well as 18 other co-defendants. This is because the evidence has been hidden to avoid the discovery requirements which would allow defense attorneys to know what information was shared and how much collaboration there was.

Politico reported Wednesday:

Staff of the committee met quietly with agents and lawyers working for Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis, in mid-April 20,22. This was just as she was preparing to convene an investigation by a special grand juries. The committee’s aides met with the Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in a previously undisclosed meeting on Jan. 6, 2022. They allowed the team to review, but not retain, a small set of evidence that they had collected.

The committee helped Willis in his early investigation, while refusing to provide material for the Justice Department’s separate federal criminal investigation into Trump’s subversion of the election. The committee’s willingness to work with Fulton County prosecutors rather than federal prosecutors at the time was due to the fact that federal prosecutors may have had to reveal evidence in criminal cases related the the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Jan. 6 committee chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) Thompson had described in the past “staff-level contact” between his committee and Fulton County prosecutors. Thompson, in early April 2022, nearly two weeks prior to the panel’s meeting with Willis’ staff, told reporters that he was unaware of the extent of those contacts. On Wednesday, Thompson said to POLITICO he was unaware of the in-person meeting that took place that spring.

Willis shared evidence from the January 6, Committee with Willis, when she convened a “special-purpose grand jury” prior to the criminal Grand Jury. Politico points out that there are no defendants and therefore no motions by defense for discovery.

The defense may not be able to get all the evidence they need because the January 6 Committee destroyed their records – ironically, President Donald Trump is facing a separate prosecution over mishandling of government documents.

The fact that Nancy Pelosi, then Speaker of the House (D-CA), prevented Republicans from selecting committee members, meant that a large portion of the evidence collected by the January 6 Committee was presented in a way that violated civil rights for defendants and witnesses. The witnesses who met with the committee’s attorneys behind closed doors said that there was not a semblance a two-sided adversarial process, but only an inquisition. Even “Republicans”, they found, were against Trump.

Willis’s reputation is already in question after the lawyers of Trump co-defendant Mike Roman submitted a motion alleging she had an inappropriate relationship with Nathan Wade, a fellow prosecutor from whom both Willis as well as Wade benefited financially.
