DeSantis admin directs Florida universities to terminate student chapters that support ‘Hamas terrorism’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken action in coordination with the chancellor for the state’s universities system to take action against student groups that they claim have expressed support of “Hamas terrorists.” This could include terminating student chapters and suspending administrators.

In a letter sent to all the universities in Florida by Ray Rodrigues as chancellor of State University System of Florida exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital, he wrote: “During a holy Jewish Holiday, the terrorist organization Hamas launched an unprovoked assault on Israel, among the victims were women, children, and the elderly.”

The number of Israelis killed to date is approximately 1,400, including 31 Americans. “Governor DeSantis has condemned these attacks, as have our State University System and Florida College System.”

In the letter, it is stated that National Students for Justice in Palestine, a group of students present in two Florida universities, has published a toolkit that describes the Hamas movement as “the Resistance” and states that “Palestinian Students in Exile are PART OF this movement, NOT in solidarity with this Movement.”

The letter states that “knowingly providing material support… to a designated terrorist foreign organization is a felony under Florida law.”

Rodrigues writes, “These chapters are under the leadership of the National Students for Justice in Palestine who distributed a kit identifying them as part of Operation AlAqsa Flood.”

In consultation with Governor DeSantis and based on the National SJP’s support for terrorism, the student chapter must be deactivated. These two student groups may create another organization that adheres to Florida state statutes as well as university policies. If reapplication is made, the two institutions should waive their fall deadlines for these two student chapters.

Rodrigues writes in his letter that he plans to continue working with DeSantis’ office “to ensure that we all use all the tools at our disposal” to crackdown on campus demonstrations which go beyond protected First Amendment speeches and into harmful support for terrorist organizations.

The letter says that “these measures may include adverse employment actions or suspensions of school officials.” It also states that “promoting excellent educational quality and providing a safe learning environment for all children is paramount.”

DeSantis is a presidential candidate for 2024. He has been vocal in his support of cracking down and condemning Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, which killed over 1,400 Israelis. He said recently that if elected president, he would deport foreigners who support Hamas and cancel their student visas.

DeSantis also plans to call a special session of the Florida legislature to increase state sanction on Iran, which is the principal financial supporter for Hamas.

DeSantis also allocated state resources for an evacuation operation, which was responsible chartering hundreds American stranded in Israel back to the United States on flights. He praised this as more efficient than the efforts of the Biden Administration.

DeSantis stated, “We filled the void.” “There was no leader.” We stepped in and took the lead.
