Imprisoned pro-life activist hopes for Trump pardon after prosecution by Biden DOJ
The pro-life activist in prison for blocking the entrance to an abortion clinic in Washington, D.C. said that he hopes to be pardoned by Donald Trump next month.
Jonathan Darnel (43), a Thomson FCI employee in Illinois, spoke to The Washington Times about his plans to use his freedom to repeal the federal law which sent dozens anti-abortion protesters to prison during the Biden Administration.
Darnel, a pro-life activist from 2020, was part of an infiltrated group of 10 protesters who chained the entrance to an abortion clinic. All were convicted of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE Act) and are currently serving prison sentences.
The harshest punishment was handed out to Lauren Handy. She was a prominent anti-abortion activist who had five fetuses found in her house when she was arrested two years ago.

Darnel says his time spent in prison has allowed him to analyze “problems with the justice system.”
Darnel stated that this starts with Mr. Trump cleaning up the agencies, which the activist believes selectively enforced FACE Act – a 30-year old law that prohibits anyone from blocking access to abortion clinics as well as pro-life pregnancy centres.
Since Mr. Biden’s election, 32 out of 34 people convicted in accordance with the law are pro-life activists. This is despite the fact that nearly 100 attacks have been made on pro-life abortion centers since May 2022, when the landmark Roe V. Wade decision was overturned.
Darnel told Darnel over the phone that “all the agents and people who went along to enforce the FACE Act need to be removed.” “There cannot be a FACE Act under the Trump administration.”
Republicans on Capitol Hill seem to be in agreement with him.
Last week, Texas Rep. Chip Roy presided over an hearing to repeal the FACE Act.
Paul Vaughn was called to testify at the hearing. He is a prolife activist, who was arrested over a year ago by armed FBI agents after he prayed outside an abortion clinic in Tennessee. He was sentenced for three years of supervision.
Eva Edl (89), a woman who is wheelchair-bound and a survivor of a Soviet concentration camp, awaits sentencing for her part in the Michigan blockade that took place in 2020. She is still awaiting sentencing but could spend up to 11-years behind bars.
Erin Hawley of the Alliance Defending Freedom testified to the congressional hearing about federal prosecutors escalating the charges against prolife demonstrators, by charging them with “conspiracy” against rights offenses.
Mr. Roy stated that the Trump administration should take into consideration pardoning or commuting sentences for FACE Act defendants, who were victims of targeted harassment. “Unequally applying the law isn’t really law.” It’s tyranny.”
Darnel said that he was fortunate to have a low-security prison with little violence because “everyone is eager to leave.”
He said that he had also shared his faith in prison with other prisoners. Darnel has seen some inmates grow closer to God, but others view repentance negatively.
He says that the sad truth about prison is that there are some inmates who cannot be rehabilitated. They can only do good for society if they are removed.
He wanted his sentence as a warning to other prolife activists, that while prison is far from ideal, it’s not the end.
Darnel stated at one time that “some people were willing go the whole way for their belief — to go to jail.” Darnel added that pro-lifers shouldn’t be afraid to do what is right, even if it means being in prison.
