Major California bills Newsom just signed, vetoed

California Gov. Gavin Newsom approved and vetoed several bills during the recent legislative session.

Some of the laws signed include a ban for certain chemicals to be used in foods and drinks. Another bill requires big companies to disclose their emissions.

Newsom vetoed a number of bills, including one that would have decriminalized the use of psychedelic mushroom.

Here are some of the bills Newsom vetoed and signed on Saturday.

FOOD INGREDIENTS BANNED

California is the first to ban four chemicals found in popular candies, drinks and other foods because they are linked to certain health issues.

Newsom has signed a bill banning the No. The red dye No. 3 is used in food coloring products such as Peeps marshmallow treats, which are most closely associated with Easter. This chemical, which has been linked with cancer, has been banned in makeup for over 30 years.

This law also prohibits potassium bromate, which is found in baked goods, as well as brominated oil (which can be found in many store-brand sodas) and propylparaben.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE

SB 770, introduced by Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco (D), would require the California Health and Human Services Agency to collaborate with the federal government in order to define the requirements for a federal waiver request. All Californians will have the right to receive a standard set of health services.

This package could include services and support for long-term care, relieving the growing burden on millions of families.

UNIONIZATION OF LEGISLATIVE STAFF

After a summer marked by strikes of hotel workers, writers, and actors, lawmakers have passed a law allowing legislative staffers the right to unionize.

It also allows lower level staff to form and join a union. However, it does not apply for lawmakers, chiefs or staff in the Legislature.

CLIMATE CORPORATE Data

More than 5,300 California-based companies with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion are required to report their direct and indirect emission. This includes emissions from the operation of a store or building, as well as from employee travel for business and from transporting products.

Advocates say that SB 253 will increase transparency for the public on how large businesses contribute to climate changes and could encourage them to reduce their emissions. Many businesses, they say, already report some of their emission data to the state.
