GOP debt ceiling negotiator: McCarthy’s Speakership ‘absolutely safe’ despite grumblings

Rep. Garret Graves (R-La. Garret Graves (R-La) helped negotiate the debt ceiling bill recently passed with the White House. On Sunday, he dismissed concerns his GOP colleagues would try to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He said the California Republican’s position is “absolutely secure.”

I’ll tell it to you straight away, Speaker McCarthy’s job is safe. Graves said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that McCarthy will continue to deliver wins for the nation, change the direction of Washington, and be more representative of the American priorities across the country.

He continued, “I’m confident that his position is secure, and we will continue to march forward, building on the historic victories that he has been able achieve this year.”

Graves, McCarthy’s key ally, has come to McCarthy’s defense, dismissing concerns that GOP legislators might introduce a motion for the Speaker to resign. Graves praised McCarthy’s accomplishments during the negotiations, stating, “This Speaker is one of the most effective strategists that we have ever had.”

The deal on debt limits, which was passed by the House and Senate and signed into law last Saturday, suspends debt ceilings for two years and some government spending caps in exchange.
