GOP lawmaker planning to follow Garland contempt vote with proposing resolution to arrest him

A document published by the U.S. Government Publishing Office states that “under the inherent power of contempt of the House the recalcitrant witnesses may be arrested, and tried before the bar of House with possible imprisonment.”

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) announced that after the House passed a resolution holding Attorney General Merrick G. Garland in contempt, she would seek support for an “inherent” contempt resolution against him.

Fox News reported that Luna stated, “We fully intend to bring this case.” “I’m not sure I have much confidence in the Department of Justice. The American people don’t either. We are trying to restore a level playing ground and demonstrate that there should be accountability from the bottom to the top.”

According to the official House Rules on a document published by the U.S. Government Publishing Office “under the inherent power of the House the recalcitrant witnesses may be arrested and tried before the bar of House with the offender potentially facing incarceration.”

Luna stated that she will “wait until the vote happens the way the leadership wants it to occur with the criminal contempt”, on Wednesday.

She said, “After that, the clock will start on our stuff.”
