Antisemitic incidents on rise across US, report finds

Researchers said that the rise in antisemitism in the U.S. from 2022 to now shows no sign of abating, as political radicals are becoming more mainstream.

The Center for the Study of Contemporary European Jewry at Tel Aviv University and the Anti-Defamation League in the United States released the report as Israel observed its annual Day of Remembrance for the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust.

The report from last year found that antisemitic incidents reached a new record high in 2021, as the coronavirus epidemic fueled a global rise in antisemitism. Researchers said this year that “2022 didn’t mark a universal reverse of the trend and, in some countries, including the United States, the trend intensified.”

Antisemitic incidents decreased in other countries with large Jewish communities, including France, Canada and Argentina.

ADL reported that antisemitic incidents increased in the U.S. by over 35% during the last year. From 2,721 in 2020 to 3,697 for 2022. The organization also said that antisemitic propaganda and white supremacist rhetoric in the U.S. reached new heights.

According to their respective police departments, antisemitic crimes against Jews increased in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, the three cities with the largest Jewish populations.

Researchers found that visible Jews, especially ultra-Orthodox Jews (also known as haredi Jews), are the main targets of antisemitic attacks in the West.

The report stated that “Haredi Jews were the main victims, not only because it is easy to identify them as Jews but also because of their perception as being vulnerable and unlikely fight back.”

It is not just white supremacists who are responsible for the rise of anti-Semitism in America. The article said that the antisemitism on both the right and left is pushing its way into mainstream American politics and culture.

The report’s authors noted that while antisemitism is not new in America, “American Jews” have been able to live in peace since World War II because they know civil society, its institutions, and the government are reliable barriers against prejudice, discrimination and violence. The violent attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions over the past few years have destroyed the notion of exceptionalism.

The report in Israel also criticised the inclusion of the ultranationalist, religious Jewish Power Party, founded by Meir K., a racist anti-Arab Rabbi who died before the publication of this report. The paper stated that the party “polluted Israeli’s public discourse with chilling racism expressions which would have resulted in the immediate termination of the political career of these individuals in other democracies.”

The report stated that “the obvious must be said: Racism, racism and Jewish racism are as deplorable and should never ever be excused or tolerated.”
