AP Bans “Crisis Pregnancy Centers,” Tells Reporters to Call Them “Anti-Abortion Centers”

The Associated Press is getting more awake. They have now instructed journalists to use the term “antiabortion center” instead of “crisis pregnancy center”. They advised journalists to avoid using scare-quotes around “crisis abortion center” and to explain that their goal is to discourage people from having an abortion.

Thomas Glessner, the president of The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates said that it was disgraceful that journalists would give in to pro-abortion activists to do their bidding. His organization won a 2018 U.S. Supreme Court case in favor of then-California Attorney general Xavier Becerra who used state law to force pregnancy centers to post information on nearby abortion facilities.

Glessner said, “If they truly cared about integrity they would know that pregnancy centres seek to assist women facing unplanned pregnancies by providing material and emotional support.” “Many centers offer free medical services.”

Glessner stated that these centers were the backbone of pro-life, and served as representatives on the ground of a movement that cares deeply about both mother and baby. It is a shame that the media has taken such an active position against these centers, especially in a time when women need help, acknowledgment, and someone they can turn to during difficult times.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska praised the AP Style Guide Change, writing: “Please see a recent update to AP style which avoids using the ‘fetal beat’ bill since this legislation does not address a fetus, it’s still an embryo, nor a heartbeat, it hasn’t developed a human heart yet).”

The Associated Press published guidelines on abortion in December that prohibited the use of “prolife” and instead advised “anti-abortion/abortion-rights.”
