First Circuit Court of Appeals confirmed a ruling of a lower court dismissing the lawsuit in 2022. Parents sued after teachers at Baird Middle School began calling the 11-year old student by the name chosen by the child.

These employees used the given name of the child and the gender identity in their communications with parents.

The defendants claimed they followed state guidelines to prevent discrimination on the basis of gender identity. However, plaintiffs claim their rights under the 14th Amendment as parents have been violated.
