Senate unanimously passes resolution to reinstate formal dress code after Sen. John Fetterman controversy

After a bipartisan backlash against Sen. Last week, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) quietly relaxed the dress code requirements for Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), allowing him to continue wearing hooded sweatshirts, gym shorts, and other casual clothing.

The bipartisan Senate bill, sponsored by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Sen. Mitt Mitt Romney (R-Utah), requires members to wear a certain dress on the Senate floor.

Men are required to wear a jacket, tie and slacks according to the new rules. The resolution does specify dress codes for female members.

Schumer stated that a formal dress code was “the right way forward” in his Wednesday remarks.

Schumer stated that “even though we have never had a formal dress code, recent events have led us to feel like formalizing it is the best way forward.” I deeply appreciate that Senator Fetterman worked with me to reach an agreement we can all agree on, and I also appreciate the leadership of Sen. Manchin & Sen. Romney in this matter.

After the vote, Fetterman’s office issued a short statement which included a viral photo of Kevin James shrugging sheepishly.

The resolution was passed after Schumer’s decision to drop the dress code for Senators on September 17 caused a lot of backlash.

Many people have called it the “Fetterman rule” because Fetterman is often seen wearing gym shorts with his trademark hoodie around the Capitol Building.
