Marjorie Taylor Greene targeted by failed Christmas swatting attempt

The Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia resident, was the victim of a swatting attack at her Georgia home on Christmas morning. Both the congresswoman, and the local police, confirmed the incident. This is the latest example of someone calling a fake crisis to attract armed officers, or SWAT teams, to her residence.

Kelly Madden, a spokesperson for the Rome Police Department, said that officers did not go to the home after the department quickly confirmed the call as a hoax.

“I just got swatted. It’s the eighth time. I’m here with my family for Christmas. “My local police are THE BEST and shouldn’t be dealing with this,” Greene wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Madden reported that just before 11 am on Monday morning, a man from New York called Georgia’s suicide hotline, saying he shot his girlfriend in Greene’s house and would then kill himself. When the suicide hotline operators recognized Georgia Congresswoman Greene’s home address, they immediately transferred the call to police.

The department confirmed that it had contacted Greene’s private security to confirm her safety and there was no urgent situation at Greene’s residence. Madden said that the call was determined to be an attempted swatting, and so police were canceled in route.

She said, “We decided before our personnel arrived at her location that there wasn’t an emergency and no reason to respond,” “Her security detail was in control and nothing happened.”

The former House Democratic Majority stripped her of her committee assignments during her first term. This was due to racist remarks, her acceptance of conspiracy theories, and her previous endorsement of violence towards Democratic officials. She has gained more power under the current Republican leadership in the House and is still a fiery advocate for the extreme right.

Madden confirmed that Greene’s claim of being the target for eight swatting attacks is true. In the past, calls were made claiming that bodies had been discovered in her bathtub and other parts of her house. Her home is located approximately 70 miles (113 km) northwest of Atlanta. Last year, police also responded to false reports that shootings had occurred outside her home.

The department stated that it sent officers to Greene’s house as a response to these prior incidents, but since then has formed a strong working relationship with Greene’s security detail. This allows officers to assess the threat better. Madden stated that the criminal investigations division was working to identify and track down Monday’s caller.

A New Yorker was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in August for making threats to Greene’s Washington, D.C., offices.

Brandon Williams, a Republican U.S. Rep., said in a posting on X he had also been targeted by a swatting attack on Christmas Day. The Cayuga county sheriff’s office received a false complaint of a shooting in the central New York home of the congressman and sent officers to confirm there was no danger. Sheriff Brian Schenck didn’t immediately return phone calls seeking more details.

Williams wrote: “Our house was swatted today afternoon.” “Thanks to Deputies who called me prior to their arrival. They took home homemade cookies and spiced almonds! “Merry Christmas to everyone!”
