Biden was unaware of Austin’s hospitalization until the 4th, and only learned about his cancer diagnosis last week. According to the Pentagon, Austin was diagnosed early in December.

The Pentagon hasn’t said when Austin will be released from hospital, but claimed that his condition is “good.”

The U.S. Military conducted strikes against Houthi forces during Austin’s hospitalization. This was in response to the months-long drone and missile attacks that had been made on U.S. commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea.

Biden claimed to have ordered the strikes and the Pentagon stated that Austin was actively involved in directing and overseeing them from the hospital. The Houthis say they will retaliate.
