California: Reparations Now Up to $360,000; State Never Allowed Slavery
California, an unrestricted state that joined the Union in 1850, is considering reparations up to $360,000 for eligible recipients — more than half the amount proposed last year.
Breitbart News reported that a state commission considering reparations made recommendations in December. It recommended that eligible recipients, those who are descended from ex-black slaves, could be eligible for as much as $233,000.
Bloomberg News reports that the amount has risen to $360,000 per recipient now, possibly due to pressure from San Francisco’s local efforts to make it $5 million per black resident.
The state is in deficit by about $25 billion and many cities are short of funds. It is unclear where the money will come. It is not clear why California would pay for sins that it didn’t commit.
Advocates of reparations claim that California is guilty regardless of the fact that there is still racial equality. It seems that the goal is to encourage the entire nation to pay reparations. Bloomberg News reported:
“If California can confess its sins, and change the narrative,” stated Shirley Weber (California Secretary of State), who created the task force while she was a member of the state assembly.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), signed legislation to establish the reparations commission during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. Although the committee has made preliminary recommendations regarding separate schooling for Californians of color, it is not representative of California’s demographic and does not have a single member who is white.
It will present its final report to state legislators later in the year.
