Report: Boebert, Gaetz, Perry Told McCarthy They Don’t Mind if Democrat Hakeem Jeffries Wins Speakership

In a private meeting held Monday, three House Freedom Caucus members told GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R–CA) that they wouldn’t mind if Hakeem Jeffries (D–NY) becomes the next House Democrat Leader.

According to Punchbowl News, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R.CO), Rep. Matt Gaetz(R-FL) and Rep. Scott Perry, who met privately with McCarthy to discuss voting to elect him as House Speaker, said that they would like to create their own legal entity in Congress to handle wage lawsuits.

The publication reported that all three legislators voted against McCarthy for Speaker. It also noted that the group told Republican leaders that they didn’t mind if Tuesday’s vote went to a plurality, and Jeffries is elected to the highest office because they will “fight” him.

McCarthy reportedly asked House Freedom Caucus members to make their offer to the Republican Conference in a closed session on Tuesday morning. He didn’t consider the offer viable. McCarthy may have made this request to show his support for the Freedom Caucus, which has been in the making for more than a decade.

They offered specific committee assignments to many members of their caucus. Subcommittee chairs were also included.

McCarthy stated to Punchbowl, on the way to the meeting of the whole House Republican Conference that his goal today was to “unite” the team.

He continued, “Explain what happened.” The difficult thing is that we made a commitment to America and not to a few individuals here to fight for their rights. This is all about the country and we will have to make the difference.
