Harris says Trump can’t be spared accountability for Jan. 6

Vice President Kamala Harris stated Wednesday that anyone responsible for the attempt to overturn the presidential election results in 2020 and the violence that followed at the U.S Capitol should be held accountable, even if it is Donald Trump.

Harris told The Associated Press that “the evidence and the facts will take it wherever they may” in Jakarta, Indonesia where she attended a regional summit.

The federal prosecutors indicted Trump for his attempts to cling onto power in 2020. He was also charged in Georgia for a plot to subvert voters’ will who voted for Democrat Joe Biden rather than giving Trump a second-term.

Harris, who was California’s Attorney General before becoming a U.S. Senator in Washington, said: “I spent most of my career as an attorney.” “I think people should be held responsible under the law. “And when they break the laws, there should accountability.”

In order to avoid the appearance of interference by the White House in the prosecution’s work, the White House has been circumspect when addressing Trump’s criminal accusations. Biden and Harris, however, have spoken out about the dangers that the post-2020 election has exposed to the American democracy.

In an interview with AP, the vice president stated that “democracies can be fragile.” “They are only as strong as the will to fight.”

Harris represents the United States in the place of Biden at the summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Harris, in her interview, reiterated that the White House was committed to the region despite the president’s absence.

She said, “I believe that we as Americans have a significant interest in strengthening and developing these relationships, not only for our security, but also for our future prosperity.”

Southeast Asia is an important arena for rivalry between China and the United States, especially when it comes down to the South China Sea. Its waters are used by one-third of all global shipping.

Beijing has recently released a map of its government that highlights the disputed claims it makes to the sea.

“It is a violation of law.” Harris told AP that is where he placed the map.

ASEAN has been unable to progress on certain issues, such as the military coup that occurred in Myanmar. However, Harris stated that the organization is “absolutely,” a crucial forum.

She said: “The fact so many world leaders are meeting in one place to tackle some of the most pressing challenges that our planet faces is a strong sign of commitment and potential collaboration between each nation to the coalition.”

Harris warned against reports that Russia had been in talks with North Korea to obtain weapons for its invasion into Ukraine. He called the alliance “ill-advised.”

She said that “Russia is a strategic fail.” “Their aggressive and unprovoked action in Ukraine has resulted into a situation in which the aura and myth about the Russian military have now been dispelled.”

Harris dismissed concerns over Biden’s aging, despite the fact that he is widely viewed as being too old to hold office. According to a recent AP/NORC survey, 77% of Americans think he is too old to serve a second term. 69% of Democrats also agree.

Harris’ position as the next-in-line to the presidency has increased her scrutiny, especially since she would serve alongside a president that could be 86 years old at the end a second term. Some Republican presidential candidates claim that voting for Biden is really a vote against Harris, and not in a positive way.

“I see him everyday. She said that we spent a lot of time together in the Oval Office. “I see his ability to weave through complicated issues in a manner no one else could to make important and smart decisions for the American people,” she said. “I will tell you that the American people want to know, in the end, that their president is able to deliver. And Joe Biden delivers.”

Harris called the idea that she could become president “hypothetical”, but added that she was prepared.

She said, “Joe Biden will be fine. So that won’t happen.” “But let’s also understand that each vice president – every vice president – understands that they have to be very clear when they take their oath about the responsibility that they might have to take on the job of president.”

Harris added, “I’m no different.”
